History of Matheran

HISTORY OF MATHERAN

Matheran was once very dense including its base and plateau. Shivaji Maharaj went to Matheran to convert it to a fort but abandoned it due to its easily accessible slopes as well as it was just too big to make it a fort. There were many easy accessible slopes to climb Matheran. Hence Shivaji Maharaj made forts on its surronding mountains which were small and more inaccessible such as Peb, Chanderi, Prabalgad, Irshalgad.

Matheran was just used for grazing land at its slopes. In 1850 during month of May, Bombay Civil Service Hugh Malet was going to Thane from Pune and halted in Chowk Bungalow. At evening he took his gun and went to stroll at the Chowk and climbed the hill halfway just for stroll. This made him wonder it must be beautiful up there and it is worth making an exploration.
The next day he returned to climb the hill again with his guide Patel of Sondewadi through the one tree hill route taking them to the one tree hill where there was a Jambul tree once. Even during the may the Dharavi river was in waters due to so many springs in Matheran unlike now which it goes dry. He then returned down again via Rambagh route. He then told goodbye to his guide and returned to Thane.

In september Malet told Patel to go up the hill with sheeps rabbits fowl and wait for him there. Madhoo Rao, village chief was making huts ready for then collector for this reason. Malet came and made the route much more clear and went back again.

He returned in February again with Captain Henry Barr who had earlier climbed Matheran much before Malet as Madhoo Rao was unaware of this too. Barr chosed his spots to make his Bungalow as well as Hugh Malet made his bungalow in which is now The Byke hotel. Later Malet recieved Rs500 from government to make route more clear from Chowk. Hence this laid the opening up of Matheran hill station with multiple exploration and routes in making by then British government which stands today. Matheran was made.
