Big Chowk Point, Matheran

Big Chowk point is named as it is larger than the little chowk point in terms of area as well as size. Big chowk point overlooks the Varosa forest valley and one can see Prabalgad, Irshalgad and One tree hill pinnacle from here. This point is big and quite open. It provides a full Morbe dam view. One can see the two villages at the base Ambewadi and Tadwadi from where the One tree hill trek starts. From this route of One tree hill Hugh Pointz Malet first trekked up the Matheran in 1850.

Also distance between Little Chowk and Big Chowk is around 800m. There are no stalls at Big point and it is around 3.5-4 km from main Matheran market. 

One can also see the Cliffs of Chowk as the cliff of Chowk point is very steep. The cliffs are broken at certain points. Like Little chow Big Chowk is also secluded unlike other points of Matheran due to its distance from market. This is also the southern most point of Matheran.

Little Chowk Point, Matheran


There is only 1 point at the south side of Matheran which is known as Chowk Point which is divided into 2 points namely Little Chowk and Big Chowk points. These points are far end from Matheran market around 3.5km. These points are not much crowded as other points due to its distance. These points namely provide view of Morbe dam and western ghats. 

Little chowk point has only one refreshment stall. This point is small compared to Big chowk point. This point provides view of Sondai, Bhivpuri and Garbett plateau. Also one can view the elephants head of Big chowk point from here. The cliffs of these points are very steep.

The only refreshment shop in Little Chowk point managed by a friendly person which makes nice lemon juice at 25Rs

Chowk Point, Matheran


Chowk point is the farthest south point which provides excellent views of the Morbe Dam and other mountain ranges. This is the point through which Hugh Pointz Malet discovered Matheran in 1850. Chowk Point is also farthest point like Panorama and Garbett.

It is named Chowk point because one can see the Chowk village at the base of mountain where there is Morbe Dam. The point is a good 3.5km walk from the main Matheran market which takes quite a good time and energy. The chowk point is very big and has a good space for sitting and resting and to view great Sahyadris. Lonavala is clear and distinct from this point.

Then collector of Thane district asked a local at chowk region in 1850

” Whats up there ”

to which local replied ” Matheran aahe ”

and this how the collector trekked up the mountain from this Chowk region and established then British Hill station.
