Chowk Point, Matheran

Chowk point is the farthest south point which provides excellent views of the Morbe Dam and other mountain ranges. This is the point through which Hugh Pointz Malet discovered Matheran in 1850. Chowk Point is also farthest point like Panorama and Garbett.

It is named Chowk point because one can see the Chowk village at the base of mountain where there is Morbe Dam. The point is a good 3.5km walk from the main Matheran market which takes quite a good time and energy. The chowk point is very big and has a good space for sitting and resting and to view great Sahyadris. Lonavala is clear and distinct from this point.

There is only 1 point at the south side of Matheran which is known as Chowk Point which is divided into 2 points namely Little Chowk and Big Chowk points. Distance between Little Chowk and Big Chowk is around 800m.

Hugh Poyntz Malet
Then collector of Thane district asked a local at chowk region in 1850

” Whats up there ”

to which local replied ” Matheran aahe ”

and this how the collector trekked up the mountain from this Chowk region and established then British Hill station.
